medical bill disputes

A Medical Bill Isn’t Always Final. Let’s Get the Facts Straight.

Serving clients in East Lansing, Lansing, Flint, Jackson, Charlotte—plus surrounding Mid‑Michigan communities.

Medical bills can be confusing, stressful, and sometimes flat-out wrong—especially when insurance, coding, or provider billing practices don’t line up with what you were told. I’m Tara Nichol, an attorney based in East Lansing. I help clients evaluate medical bill disputes, organize documentation, and take practical next steps, including appeals or dispute processes when available. If your bill is escalating into collections or you’re not sure what to do next, let’s talk.

When this comes up

  • You received a bill that doesn’t match what you expected or were quoted
  • Insurance denied coverage or paid less than expected
  • You’re being billed for services you don’t believe you received
  • The bill shows out-of-network charges you didn’t understand at the time
  • You’re getting repeated statements, calls, or collection notices
  • You want a clear plan to dispute the bill without creating new problems

What I do (consumer-focused approach)

  • Review the bill(s) and related documents to clarify what’s being charged and why
  • Organize your timeline and paperwork so the dispute is clear and supported
  • Identify practical next steps (provider billing office, insurer process, or other dispute channels)
  • Help you communicate clearly and consistently so you’re not stuck in endless back-and-forth
  • Address escalation issues if the dispute is moving toward collections

What to bring / what I need from you

  • The bill(s), statements, and any itemized bill you have
  • Explanation of Benefits (EOB) documents from insurance (if applicable)
  • Any denial letters or insurer messages explaining the reason for denial
  • Notes on dates of service and what you were told about cost/coverage
  • Any correspondence with the provider billing office or collections
  • Any payment history or payment plan paperwork (if applicable)

Your Top Questions (FAQ)

Q: What should I do first if I think a medical bill is wrong?

A: Start by contacting the provider’s billing office and asking for clarification and an itemized bill if you don’t already have one. Many issues can be resolved at that stage (coding, duplicate charges, missing insurance info, or simple billing errors). If you’re not getting clear answers, the problem keeps repeating, or the bill is escalating, that’s often when additional help makes sense.

Q: What’s the difference between a provider billing dispute and an insurance denial?

A: A provider billing dispute is about what the provider is charging and how it’s billed. An insurance denial is about what the insurer will cover under the plan. Sometimes both issues are happening at the same time, which is why it helps to map out the paperwork and timeline clearly.

Q: What are the most common mistakes people make when disputing a medical bill?

A: The biggest issues I see are waiting too long to address the bill, not getting an itemized statement, losing track of who said what (and when), and mixing insurance issues with provider billing issues without a clear paper trail. Another common problem is making partial payments or agreements without understanding what they mean for the dispute. A clear timeline and organized documentation usually make the process much easier to handle.
